Year 7 RV

Hello everyone,

Since it was Prophets Muhammad’s birthday in April, high school students had a pin board decoration competition. Students had to pick a `time` from the noble prophets life and decorate the pin board. Every class did a great job and came up with very creative and brilliant ideas. Well done to everyone who has contributed.

`7 C` has won the competition and they will be going to Krispy Kreme on Thursday to enjoy their afternoon after all the hard work they have put together. They have shown a perfect example of how to work as a team for one purpose.

Again well done 7 C !

Year 8 Science

What is the world made of?

Year 8 students are studying chemistry to find out about what makes the world we are in. They have been surprised to learn that just as all our words are made up of only 26 letters; all of the substances in our world are made up of only 92 elements. These elements are not obvious to us as they are combined to form the millions of substances in our everyday lives. But we have had a lot of fun getting some of the elements out of the compounds they are in. We exploded hydrogen that we obtained from acid and marvelled at the eruption of a cone of carbon from a jar of sugar. Atoms, molecules, compounds and lattices – students are finding that the world of chemistry is amazing!

Here are some of the students’ toughts.

“At first, Chemistry was challenging, but after you go the hang of it, it was fun.”

“My favourite ones were getting the carbon out of sugar and putting sodium into water and it caught on fire.”

“My favourite was when we put metal in a tube and then acid. We waited for a while and then lit it with a match then it made a loud ‘pop’ sound.”

“I loved seeing all the chemical reactions and being able to do them myself. Much more educational than just clicking on a video!”

“I was surprised to find out sodium and chlorine made salt, even tough they are both dangerous substances that can harm us.”

Dead Poetry Society

The Year 9 English classes have been studying the classic film, Dead Poets Society, this term. To fully understand the message of the movie, we have been studying the characters in-depth, as well as trying out some of Mr. Keating’s lessons! Students have also presented some wonderful persuasive speeches.

Year 9G Research Science

Fooling the brain

During term 2, Year 9G Research Science has been studying psychology. Our activities have focused on how the brain makes sense of the world. Have you ever tried to say the names of colours when the words are painted in different colours? It’s not as easy as it sounds! We also examined optical illusions and what we can do to stop them deceiving our brains. And did you know that magic tricks are based on how our brains perceive and predict reality – not on what we actually see!

YEAR 10 GIRLS BOOK CLUB

For the last couple of weeks, we, the Year 10 girls, have been participating in a self-initiated book club. Through the help of Keysborough teachers and staff, we have been able to discuss books that we love and immerse ourselves in the world of literacy. We have been exposed to Gothic literature, various works of fiction and poetry from some of the most well-known and classic authors from history. It has been really beneficial because some of us have not normally been exposed to these works in our daily lives, but in the book club, we can get back to this world we’ve created for ourselves and explore the texts we like and would perhaps not get to read outside of book club. Seida Bajic, who attends book club regularly, had this to say; “The book club is a really good chance to read things I wouldn’t normally.” The best part of the book club is the openness we have with each other and the ability to share our different opinions in an inclusive and comfortable environment.
